This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
