"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: The sender also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. Multiple famous supporters have also petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals repeatedly show them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to form a group."

"Therefore all is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The group are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed confidence called for a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

But Haim will consistently be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
