The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
