The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
