British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts down to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
